Does acupuncture relieve pain?

Acupuncture is a therapy based on the idea that disease is caused by blockages in the body, and that stimulation of these areas through the use of needles facilitates healing.

These ideas go back thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. The therapy continues to be very popular and is most used for pain relief.

While some in the scientific community have dismissed it as “pseudoscience”, the following study conducted in 1981 by a group of scientists including Dr. Pert demonstrates how acupuncture induces pain relief from the stimulation of beta-endorphin release.
